Google’s Sky Map…

I’m telling ya… the sky map says the moon is RIGHT. THERE!!!

More than once Tami and I have headed out to take pictures of the full moon… and it usually does not go as planned.

The first time… we headed out to take pictures of the super blood moon eclipse. We ended up on a hill… in a park… in the dark… in the “hood”.

We downloaded Google’s Sky Map to my phone… and then we got to do Google’s version of the “hokey pokey” to calibrate the app (tip your phone forward… tip your phone back… swing your phone left… swing your phone right… rotate left… rotate right… and repeat 20 more times).

Google’s Sky Map nailed it…. yep… the moon rose… right where it said it would. Right behind an ugly trailer park and fence….

… and then it got really, really dark… and scary… and it was cold… and leaves were making creepy noises… and eclipses are kinda spooky… and we freaked out a bit 😱.

We didn’t try again for over a year… that kind of a freak out… sticks with you!

Try number two… brilliant idea… find a windmill or an old barn to use as perspective… much better than the ugly trailer park and fence.

We ended up at The Rocky Mountain Arsenal… we have a windmill… we have the wide open plains… we have a radioactive holding pond.

We do the “hokey pokey” to calibrate Google’s Sky Map… and once again Sky Map nails it… the moon rose… over there… way… way… way over there! NO. WHERE. CLOSE to the windmill! Right behind the radioactive holding pond.

..and then it got really, really dark… and scary… and it was cold… and a pack of coyotes started yipping… and we freaked out a bit 😱… and sorta walked (ran) back to the car.

Try number three… DIA… huge tents for perspective… there are lots of people (safety in numbers)… and the tents are HUGE…there is NO WAY the moon won't be near at least one of those tents!

We get there… way too early… so we wandered around and did find some photogenic Christmas decorations…

… and then it got dark… really dark… really fast… so we dashed across the terminal… out the doors to the east parking deck… did the Google Sky Map “hokey pokey”… and we waited… and we waited… and we waited… NO MOON… I am not even kidding you… there was NO MOON!?!

I’m telling ya… the Sky Map says…the moon is RIGHT. THERE!!!

So we start to wander around the parking lot… phone in the air… doing the “hokey pokey”… we wandered left… we wandered forward… we wandered to the right… we wandered aimlessly… and I just keep waving my phone around in the air…. doing the “hokey pokey”. And then… there it was… we’d almost managed to miss it… because we weren’t far enough north (or maybe it was south).

We both managed to get a couple of pictures… and neither one of us freaked out! Except for when we couldn’t find the moon… yep… we were definitely freaking out!
